Colourfastness describes how colour resists change or transfer under particular conditions. It is not one universal property that a photograph can prove. Washing, rubbing, light and other exposures ask different questions, so a bright or dark silk fabric should not be judged by colour intensity alone.

A vivid shade is not a performance test

Deep blue, red or green can look striking in a product photograph. That visual saturation does not establish whether colour will transfer or fade. Equally, a pale shade is not an automatic guarantee of stability. Use any specific care and testing information supplied for the fabric instead of making assumptions from its colour or price.

Read the care guidance as a set

Care symbols distinguish processes such as washing, bleaching, drying, ironing and professional care. GINETEX explains that its care labelling indicates the maximum permitted treatments. A permission in one category does not imply permission in every other category. For example, an ironing symbol should not be read as a complete cleaning instruction.

The finished garment contains more than the main cloth

A dress may combine outer fabric, lining, decorative yarn, embroidery and other components. Their care needs may differ. Keep the fabric information with the finished garment so that cleaning decisions can take those details into account. A broad statement about silk should not override more specific guidance for a decorated or layered textile.

Avoid improvising from unrelated fabric advice

A routine that suits one plain silk fabric may not suit another textile with metallic details or a different finish. Do not assume that a small home test authorises washing an entire garment. If instructions are unclear, use the fabric-specific information and appropriate professional advice rather than applying a general recipe for soaking, stain treatment or heat.

Questions buyers ask

Does yarn-dyed fabric always keep its colour better?

The dyeing stage alone does not establish a colourfastness result. Performance depends on the actual textile and the conditions assessed.

Can sunlight change the impression of a colour without fading it?

Different lighting can make a shade look different immediately; that visual change is separate from a lasting colour change caused by exposure.

Where does storage fit in?

Storage and cleaning are different topics. Our silk storage guide covers keeping unused fabric organised and protected between projects.
