Buying Italian Silk Fabric in the UAE: 30 Questions Answered

Choosing fabric online means looking beyond a beautiful pattern. This guide answers 30 practical questions about buying Italian silk fabrics for Dubai, Abu Dhabi and the wider UAE: how to compare materials, plan a garment and understand exactly what you are ordering.

Como Silk Atelier sells fabric, not finished garments. Start with silk jacquard, silk satin, silk chiffon or jacquard lurex. Each article has its own specifications; a collection name is not a substitute for the individual product details.

Buying Italian fabrics in the UAE

1. Where can I buy Italian silk fabric in Dubai?

You can order Italian silk fabrics online from Como Silk Atelier for delivery to Dubai. Browse the dedicated silk collections, compare the original fabric photographs and open the selected article for its current AED price and availability. Our Dubai silk buying page introduces the main options. Ordering online does not imply a walk-in Dubai shop or local stock.

2. Where can I buy Italian silk fabric in Abu Dhabi?

Como Silk Atelier accepts online orders for delivery to Abu Dhabi under its current shipping terms. Choose the fabric by article reference and give a complete delivery address and telephone number at checkout. Orders ship from Italy; consult the delivery page before planning a fitting or occasion.

3. Who sells the best fabrics in the UAE?

There is no single best seller for every garment or budget. Compare the exact fibre composition, origin, usable width, fabric photography, price per supplied length, delivery arrangements and return conditions. Como Silk Atelier is an option for shoppers seeking Italian dressmaking fabrics; choose the article that meets your project rather than relying on the word luxury alone.

4. Where should I buy the best Italian silk for my project?

Choose a seller that explains the individual fabric and what is included. For an occasion kaftan, pattern scale and lining may matter more than the same qualities needed for a blouse. Shortlist fabrics from our silk collections, then ask your dressmaker to assess the garment, width, coverage and cutting plan. A higher price alone does not establish the best choice.

5. How can I check whether a fabric is made in Italy?

Look for an explicit country-of-origin statement for the selected article and ask the seller to clarify anything missing. An Italian-sounding design name, a photograph or the word Como alone is not proof of manufacturing origin. Our product pages identify Made in Italy where recorded for the article; request clarification with the fabric code before ordering when origin documentation matters to you.

6. Does Made in Italy mean the fabric is 100% silk?

No. Origin and fibre composition answer different questions. A fabric made in Italy may be pure silk, a blend or another material. Metallic and decorative constructions can include additional fibres. Read the selected article's composition separately from its origin and do not assume that every product in this store is silk.

Understanding silk and fabric names

7. How do I choose pure silk rather than a silk blend?

Look for an explicit 100% silk composition on the exact product. A fabric name or glossy appearance is not enough to establish purity. For example, Celadon Confetti TG-019 currently lists 100% silk in its specifications. Do not apply that composition to another article; ask for confirmation when its fibre percentages are not stated.

8. Is satin the same as silk?

No. Silk is a fibre; satin describes a weave associated with a smooth, lustrous face. Satin can be made from different fibres. When buying silk satin, check the selected article's fibre composition as well as its finish, width and selling format.

9. What is the difference between jacquard and printed fabric?

Jacquard refers to patterns or effects created through weaving. Printing applies colour or motifs to a fabric surface. These are not mutually exclusive: a jacquard cloth can also be printed. A photograph of a floral motif does not, by itself, establish how that motif was produced. Compare the article's description and ask when this distinction matters.

10. Should I choose jacquard, satin or chiffon?

Start with the garment's intended appearance. Compare jacquard for woven detail, satin for a lustrous surface and chiffon for sheer layers. These are starting points, not guarantees of weight, stiffness or drape. Assess the individual article and any lining with your dressmaker.

11. What is silk lurex, and is it pure silk?

Silk lurex describes a fabric with silk and metallic-effect detail; the name alone does not specify all fibre percentages. Do not assume a lurex fabric is 100% silk overall. Compare the jacquard lurex and silk lurex selections, and request the exact blend for the article when it is not published.

12. What does fil coupé mean?

Fil coupé refers to decorative cut-thread effects in a woven fabric. The effect, fibre blend and surface texture differ by article. For a garment with several seams, discuss motif placement and finishing before cutting. Browse silk royal fil coupé lurex and check the specific product rather than assuming every fil coupé has identical properties.

13. Is silk velvet always 100% silk?

No such assumption should be made from the name alone. Velvet has a pile surface, and its components and fibre blend need to be checked for the individual article. For printed silk velvet, also ask your dressmaker about pile direction, cutting layout and care before deciding how much to buy.

Choosing fabric for your garment

14. Which Italian silk fabric should I choose for an abaya?

Decide first whether the abaya will be open, closed or layered. Consider the required coverage, movement, sleeve shape and pattern placement. Jacquard, satin or decorative lurex may be options for occasion designs, while chiffon needs a deliberate layering plan. Use the abaya fabric guide and have your tailor assess the exact article.

15. Which fabric is best for a kaftan?

The right choice depends on the cut rather than the garment name alone. A broad floral or geometric motif may suit uninterrupted panels; a smaller repeat offers a different effect around seams. Compare jacquard, satin and lurex by actual appearance and ask your dressmaker to assess drape, lining and the extra length needed for wide sleeves or pattern matching.

16. Can these fabrics be used for a jalabiya or mukhawar?

They can be considered for suitable designs, subject to the fabric and construction. Discuss the neckline, sleeves and any planned embroidery with your dressmaker before choosing. A printed or woven motif is not stitched embroidery. Como Silk Atelier's fabric listings do not include a finished jalabiya, mukhawar or an embroidery service.

17. How should I choose fabric for the UAE climate?

Do not judge comfort by fibre name alone. Consider the actual fabric's weight, coverage, garment fit, lining and whether the outfit will be worn outdoors or in air conditioning. Ask for missing technical information before buying. A heavy, layered occasion garment and a loose daytime blouse have different requirements even when both use silk.

18. Is silk chiffon see-through?

Chiffon is generally sheer. The amount of visible transparency depends on the chosen article, colour, lighting and layers. Do not assume it will provide opaque coverage on its own. Plan the underlayer separately, particularly for a closed abaya, dress bodice or sleeves where coverage is important.

19. Does silk fabric need lining?

Not every project has the same lining needs. Consider transparency, comfort, seam visibility and the finished silhouette. Ask your tailor to assess the actual fabric and proposed design. Unless a product explicitly says otherwise, the lining is not included with the fabric and must be sourced separately.

Quantity, width and coordinating designs

20. Is three metres enough for a dress, abaya or kaftan?

Not for every design. Required length depends on fabric width, body measurements, garment length, sleeves, fullness, motif matching and cutting direction. Ask your dressmaker for a cutting plan before ordering. A 3-metre purchase format is a quantity description, not a promise that one piece will make every garment.

21. What is the difference between fabric length and width?

Length is the amount measured along the fabric; width is the measurement across it. Our 3-metre piece format specifies length. Width must be checked on the selected product, and double width is not an exact centimetre measurement. Ask for the usable width when the sewing pattern depends on it.

22. Is the displayed price per metre or per piece?

For a listing whose selected option is 3 metres, the displayed product price is for one 3-metre piece, not one metre. Quantity one buys one piece. To compare a fabric-only price per metre, divide that piece price by three, then compare delivery charges and other purchase terms separately.

23. Does ordering two pieces give me one continuous six-metre length?

No continuous length should be assumed. Quantity two means two 3-metre pieces. When your design requires an uninterrupted length, contact us with the article code before ordering; availability of a continuous cut must be confirmed rather than inferred from the cart quantity.

24. How do I allow for large motifs, borders or directional patterns?

Review an overall fabric photograph as well as a close-up. Ask your dressmaker to plan the centre front, neckline, sleeves, seams and any border placement. A directional design or velvet pile can limit how pattern pieces are turned, and matching motifs can require additional length. Calculate from the actual design instead of adding an arbitrary allowance.

25. Are matching jacquard and chiffon included together?

Only when the product explicitly states that it is a set. Our Amber Blue Floral jacquard TG-372-J and chiffon TG-372-C are separate products, each offered as a 3-metre piece. A photograph showing both does not make them a bundle. Check each article's availability and add each required fabric separately.

Ordering with confidence

26. Do model images show the garment I am buying?

No. You are buying fabric. Model imagery is styling inspiration; the illustrated garment, lining, bag, jewellery and other accessories are not included. Use the original fabric photograph as the main reference for the textile, and read any explanation when the photograph shows coordinating fabrics together.

27. Will fabric colours look exactly the same on my screen?

Not necessarily. Lighting, camera exposure and screen settings can change colour appearance, and reflective surfaces can look different in folds. Review the original photographs and any available movement video. For a precise colour match to another material, ask for further information before committing to the project.

28. How long does delivery to Dubai or Abu Dhabi take, and what does it cost?

Our current UAE delivery estimate is 3–5 business days from ordering, including two business days of preparation and transit from Italy. Customs, public holidays and courier delays may affect this estimate. Standard UAE delivery is free on orders of AED 200 or more and AED 25 below that threshold. Check the delivery page and checkout for the current terms; the estimate is not a guaranteed arrival date.

29. Can I return fabric bought online?

Eligibility, condition requirements, exclusions and the request process are set out in the published returns policy. Read it before ordering and contact customer care before cutting, sewing, washing or otherwise altering a fabric you may wish to return. This guide does not replace the policy or promise that every item is eligible.

30. How should I care for my fabric, and who can answer a technical question?

Follow the care instructions for the exact article; fibre, dyes, metallic detail and finishes can require different treatment. Do not assume every silk fabric is washable or suitable for the same iron setting. Email info@comosilkatelier.com with the article code and your question. Ask for any missing composition, width or care information before ordering or cutting.

A useful brief to send your dressmaker

Copy the article code and product link, then add: the garment you want to make; your measurements and sleeve design; the fabric's confirmed width and composition; number of 3-metre pieces; motif direction; coverage and lining needs; and the date you need the finished garment. Ask your dressmaker to confirm the cutting plan before purchase.
